A to Z with Portuguese sensation Antonio Zambujo

Experience the sound
of Portuguese Fado with António Zambujo

Antonio Zambujo

“Riveting… [his voice is] full of dramatic hesitations and elegant arabesques” —The New York Times

Fado is a musical style with a rich history in Portuguese culture: it is gorgeous, melodic, and moving. And there is no better singer of Fado than António Zambujo, who has won all the genre's major awards. He upholds a sense of longing and tragic dignity as he brings this traditional music into modern close-up with his velvet voice.

Zambujo's latest album release,
Rua da Emenda, expands his repertoire by incorporating African influences, as well as samba and waltz. The result remains a deeply Portuguese musical experience, filled with a disquieting sweetness, well-crafted instrumentation, and Zambujo's stirring sound.

New exhibition features 2,000 works by James Gouldthorpe
James Gouldthorpe: "Places Where People Have Sex"

In his expansive new installation, Particles: A Painting in Ten Chapters, artist James Gouldthorpe explores the passage of time and the aggregation of the self over the course of a lifetime. The exhibition opens on Friday, February 26, with an opening reception beginning at 6pm in our Project Space Gallery.

Mixing humor with melancholy, Gouldthorpe's works examine birth, childhood, adolescence, middle and old age, and death, and reflect on both the poignant and absurd nature of existence.
Comprised of around 2,000 individual mixed media paintings, Particles was developed over a three-year period while the artist was an Irvine Fellow at our Lucas Artists Residency Program.

You'll have an opportunity to meet Gouldthorpe at the opening. He will also receive the public for drop-in visits on Sunday, February 28, anytime between 11am and 3pm. And our Open Access event on Friday, May 27, at 6pm, will feature a conversation with Goldthorpe about his work, along with readings by writer and LAP artist Lynn Freed and plenty more!

We hope to see you at one (or all) of these events! Click the button below to RSVP the the gallery opening on Facebook, and be sure to invite your friends to join you. It's free, and there will be wine.
