September is Hiker
Appreciation Month!

Montalvo's Hiking Trails

All month long, we're celebrating hikers with our first-ever Hiker Appreciation Month! There are so many of you who visit our grounds every day to experience the beauty of our gardens and the serenity of our hiking trails that we want to give something back.

Stop by our Hiker Appreciation table on the dates below to pick up a trail map, some free goodies, or a dog treat. You'll also receive information about upcoming park closures, projects at Montalvo that might impact trail routes, and more. Look for the table on:

  • Wednesday, September 9, 8-10am
  • Saturday, September 19, 8-10am
  • Friday, September 25, 8-10am

Can't make it on these dates but still want to keep informed about trail news? Sign up for our special email list just for hikers by
clicking here.

You'll also have a chance to take a free guided trail hike with Ranger Linda Hyman of the Santa Clara County Parks Department. Join here on these dates and times:

  • Thursday, September 17, 12pm (meet at Garden Theatre)
  • Saturday, September 19, 9am or 11am (meet in Parking Lot 4)
  • Monday, September 28, 9am or 11am (meet in Parking Lot 4)

If you'd like to participate, please click here to RSVP.

In addition, our Gardener Ann Northrup and Fieldworks Collaborative will lead a garden and trail tour as part of our free Pop-Up Plein Air event on Sunday, September 27, and the Fieldworks team will also be on the trails later in the month offering activities to engage hikers.

So, if you're a hiker, we hope to see you this month—and thanks for being part of the Montalvo community!

Bronze works by
De Staebler
Art on the Grounds on view through the summer

Stephen de Staebler, "Two Women Walking"

There's still time to see Metaphoric States: Five Bronze Works by Stephen De Staebler on our grounds before the summer ends and El Niño hits!

Placed throughout the grounds, from the historic Villa to the base of the Great Lawn, De Staebler’s sculptures convey the fragility of human experience, the struggles of earthly existence, and the inevitability of our own mortality.

Works include Two Women Walking (pictured above), Winged Figure Ascending, Figure With Stunted Wing, Deep Striding Woman, and One Legged Woman Standing
These sculptures will remain on view through September.

If you saw the arts section of today's San Francisco Chronicle, you probably read a nice article on the exhibition; if not, you can read the full piece here.

In addition to the De Staebler pieces, our Art on the Grounds collection also features works by David Middlebrook, Cameron Hockensen, Ann Weber, Steven Siegel, and others. Click here for a complete list of what's on view now!

Plein air painting
that's far from plain

Plein Air Primer

En plein air is a French expression meaning "in the open air," often used to describe the act of painting outdoors, where artists are free to investigate nature through direct observation.

Join us this month for two fun plein air art-making experiences! In the unique setting of our breathtaking grounds, you'll be encouraged to experiment with various artistic materials and styles. All experience levels are welcome!

Beer, wine, and snacks will be available for purchase at both events. Be sure to bring a hat or sunscreen. We'll see you there!

Plein Air Primer
• Sunday, September 13, 10am-12pm
This workshop will help you with the planning and preparation needed when taking your art-making out into nature. Learn about site selection, materials, timing, and more, then enjoy some paint time on the grounds! $45 registration fee includes all necessary art materials.

Pop-Up Plein Air: Art Escapists
• Sunday, September 27, 11am-4pm; FREE!
Professional and amateur artists will gather on our Great Lawn to connect with nature—and you're invited! Explore the natural beauty around you in any media you wish, from painting to musical composition and performance. Plus, Gardener Ann Northrup and Fieldworks Collaborative will lead a tour of our gardens and hiking trails.
