Montalvo receives grant

from NEA to support Lucas Artists Residency Program

National Endowment for the Arts

The National Endowment for the Arts announced its annual Art Works grants this week, and Montalvo was among the recipients: a grant of $20,000 was given to support the Sally and Don Lucas Artists Residency Program

Funds from the NEA will be used to provide many of our Artists-in-Residence the opportunity to present or exhibit their work at Montalvo and other Bay Area venues. As many as 24 artists will be selected either by invitation or by a juried process, and more than 8,000 people are expected to benefit from residency-related exhibitions and performances.

"I am thrilled that Montalvo is once again a recipient of this prestigious honor," said Montalvo Executive Director Angela McConnell. "The NEA grant will make it possible to share the inspiring work artists create at Montalvo with an expanded audience."

For a complete listing of projects recommended for Art Works grant support, please visit the NEA website at

Jeffrey Siegel salutes

American composers with

"Gershwin & Friends"

Jeffrey Siegel

The Piano Masters Series continues on Saturday, January 19, at 8pm, with a concert by a true master of the keyboard: Steinway artist Jeffrey Siegel, who will perform "Gershwin & Friends," part of his popular series "Keyboard Conversations."

The program will showcase George Gershwin's beloved classic Rhapsody in Blue arranged for the solo piano. It will also feature the local premiere of the unpublished Meditation on a Wedding by Leonard Bernstein, The Cat and the Mouse by Aaron Copland, Scott Joplin's ragtime masterpiece The Wall Street Rag, Edward MacDowell's To a Wild Rose, and Louis Moreau Gottschalk's The Union.

Siegel's "Keyboard Conversations" include a few minutes of clever and accessible informational remarks to the audience before each piece. "I do this hoping that whatever I share about the composition will make the listening experience more meaningful, more focused, more accessible, and more inviting," he says. These concerts-plus-commentary have been performed to sold-out crowds in the US and London, and were the subject of a 2011 PBS documentary.

This one-of-a-kind performance in the intimate Carriage House Theatre is not to be missed! Tickets are available online anytime or through the Box Office at 408-961-5858 10am-4pm Monday-Friday.
