Metaphoric States: Five Bronze Works by Stephen De Staebler

Over his 50-year career, Stephen De Staebler (1933-2011) created totemic sculptures that explore the fragility of the human condition and our capacity to persevere. Visit Montalvo this summer to see five of his works on view throughout the grounds in our new exhibition, Metaphoric States: Five Bronze Works by Stephen De Staebler.

Placed throughout the grounds, De Staebler’s sculptures convey the struggles of earthly existence and the inevitability of our own mortality, while also suggesting the possibility of transcendence.

The confident pose of Deep Striding Woman (2010) suggests both determination and the inevitability of decline; the occasional appearance of winglike appendages seen in Winged Figure Ascending (2010) and Figure with Stunted Wing (2010) affirm humanity’s kinship to a divine other; Two Women Walking suggests companionship as a source of healing; One Legged Woman Standing (1982/85) finds a home among Senator Phelan's classical sculptures of the Four Seasons, replacing a figure destroyed during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.

De Staebler was an important participant in the California Clay Movement, helping to redefine ceramics as an art form through innovative methods. As early as the 1960s, he began experimenting with bronze, eventually exploring new techniques that allowed him to retain the cracked earthy appearance of clay while constructing more monumental forms.

Don't miss this opportunity to see these beautiful works from an important contemporary California artist.

Possibilities of Paper

Join us on Friday, May 29, from 6-9pm for Open Access—we'll be celebrating the gallery exhibition Possibilities of Paper before it closes at month's end.

The exhibition features works on paper by former Lucas Artists Program fellows that were either produced during their stays at our residency or influenced by their time in residence.

Guests will be treated to an engaging conversation with curator Donna Conwell, Lucas Artists Program Director Kelly Sicat, and participating artists from the show, then will take a tour of this remarkable exhibition.

So come mingle, talk with artists, and meet our new chef Jordan Wolf as he prepares tasty bites for everyone in attendance. There will also be a cash bar and food for sale.

Tickets are just $10*. Click below to purchase yours today, or call the Box Office at 408-961-5858 10am-4pm Monday-Friday.

Know you'll be there? Why not invite your friends on Facebook and carpool up the hill? We'll see you on the 29th!

*Open Access is free for members: call Chris Wilcox at 408-961-5839 or email to RSVP.
