Literary Luncheon with Joyce Maynard May 2
Joyce Maynard

Don't miss a revealing conversation and literary luncheon with author/journalist Joyce Maynard on Wednesday, May 2 at 11:30am as she discusses her remarkable life and newest, moving memoir: The Best of Us

Maynard has been a published journalist since age 15. She shot to fame with her memoir At Home in the World, which details her love affair with the author J.D. Salinger. She went on to be a reporter for The New York Times, a syndicated columnist, and a regular contributor to NPR. She has written several novels, including To Die For -- which became a critically-acclaimed movie starring Nicole Kidman -- The Usual Rules, and Labor Day. The Best of Us charts the course of a whirlwind romance and a marriage cut short by tragedy; it is a life-affirming reflection on true love, sharing wisdom gained through the experience of great loss.

Author Katherine Maxfield will lead the conversation in the intimate, historic Villa. A delicious lunch paired with wine is included in your ticket purchase, and books will be available for sale.

Year of the Dog & Biscuit Social This Weekend
Happy Year of the Dog

In honor of Lunar New Year, you are invited to join us on
Saturday, February 17 from 1-3pm as we host our first-ever Biscuit Social, celebrating both the Year of the Dog and all of our dog-owning Montalvo friends!

Tasty treats for both four-legged and two-legged guests will be served -- including water for dogs; cider, hot chocolate, coffee, and juice for people; and biscuits for both! Together, we will raise a glass (or a bowl) honoring those of the canine persuasion. Tickets are only $5 (free for Montalvo donors; email Chris Wilcox to RSVP). Click here to buy in advance.

If you're looking for more ways to celebrate Lunar New Year, consider the tradition of giving red envelopes to loved ones as a way of sharing blessings and good fortune. In the spirit of the holiday, if you would like to give Montalvo a red envelope gift, your generosity will help support our mission of providing artistic programming to the community!

In Case You Missed It...

ArtistConnect, our series of events for professional artists and educators exploring topics relating to arts education, concluded for the season this past Monday with a powerful and lively evening of poetry and conversation.

Setting the tone for the event was Ashley David, who will also be hosting a workshop at our upcoming Arts In Your Classroom conference on Saturday, March 3. David read poems by her young students, who had visited Montalvo and written about their experiences.

Venus Jones, who will also appear at this year's conference, performed her powerful work "Amen"; Serena W. Lin read from her fictional narrative that explores identity, immigration, family, and a sense of belonging; Janice Lobo Sapigao related her mother's experience working long hours in a factory; and Cintia Santana shared some of her own powerful work.

The experience was insightful and provocative for all in attendance, and we hope to grow our network of artists and educators in the upcoming season -- so be sure to keep an eye out when we announce the fall events so that you don't miss out! And if you'd like to see more from these amazing poets, you can still register for our 16th annual Arts In Your Classroom conference through the button below.
