Film & discussions in
May Open Access events

Open Access: Juan Juala es John Cage

Join us for a special conversation and film screening of Juan Jaula es John Cage in our Carriage House Theatre on Friday, May 13, at 6pm as part of our Open Access series.

Juan Jaula es John Cage is a unique documentary made by video artist Zen Cohen about Mexican composer Guillermo Galindo and his unconventional work with a Mariachi band to perform a John Cage score. It's a complex, but fascinating exploration of culture and music.

The project began in 2006 and premiered at the de Young Museum in San Francisco in 2015. It includes interviews with John Cage scholars and musicians, performances in both San Francisco and Mexico, animations, found footage, and an original score by Galindo. The screening will be followed by a conversation with Cohen and Galindo led by Bay Area curator Julie Lazar, and a reception where you'll be able to meet the filmmakers.

Tickets are just $10 (free for Montalvo members). Click below to purchase yours today, or call the box office at 408-961-5858 10am-4pm Monday-Friday.

On Friday, May 27, at 6pm, another Open Access event features a conversation with artist James Gouldthorpe, who will discuss his work Particles: A Painting in Ten Chapters, which finishes its run in the Project Space Gallery at the end of May. Read this recent review of the exhibition on SquareCylinder, and take this opportunity to see it before it's gone!

Lucas Artist Fellow and acclaimed writer Lynn Freed will also read excerpts from her short fiction and memoir at the event, and food & beverages will be available for purchase as you mingle with the artists and fellow art lovers.

May 5: Songstress Laurie Rubin
Laurie Rubin

Join us on Thursday, May 5, at 7:30pm, for what promises to be a moving performance in our intimate Carriage House Theatre featuring the talented mezzo-soprano Laurie Rubin.

Rubin, who has been blind since birth, has performed at both Carnegie Hall and the White House. With her partner Jenny Taira, she created the duo PureLand in 2014; the two also recently collaborated on a musical called Peace on Your Wings.

For this concert, Rubin and Taira will play songs from these collaborations—including the fruits of Rubin's Montalvo residency: a program weaving the musical influences of classical, folk, and electronic styles.

Vote for Capitol Steps
This election season,
the jokes are writing themselves!

Capitol Steps

How do you successfully satirize an election where the candidates seem straight out of a Saturday Night Live sketch? Let the Capitol Steps show you in their outrageous comedy show on Saturday, April 30!

Congressional staffers turned comedians, the troupe travels the States satirizing the very people and places that once employed them. The only complaints they seem to get are from the politicians NOT included in the program!

And 2016 is the best year yet for the Capitol Steps: there has never been an election more ripe for comedy, and never a more glorious time to be in the political satire business.

After Super Tuesday, the most Googled search term was "how to move to Canada." If this was you, the Capitol Steps have a rousing rendition of your future national anthem in the video below:

Choose from the 7:30pm show (limited tickets remaining) or 3pm show, and click the button to purchase tickets or call our box office at 408-961-5858 10am-4pm Monday-Friday.
