Making Contact with Sarah Scoles & Jill Tarter
Sarah Scoles & Jill Tarter

Don't miss the next exciting evening in Montalvo's Writers Series on Thursday, November 9 at 7:30pm: a conversation with Sarah Scoles and Jill Tarter, moderated by writer Katherine Maxfield, discussing Scoles's debut book: Making Contact.

Making Contact is the true story of astronomer Jill Tarter and her quest to understand extraterrestrial life in the universe -- and our own lives within the universe. Tarter was the inspiration for the controversial main character in Carl Sagan's Contact. In the book, Scoles explores the life of this fascinating figure at the center of the final frontier of scientific investigation. Scoles is a science writer whose work has appeared in Wired, Astonomy, and numerous other publications.

Act Out at ArtistConnect October 30
ArtistConnect October 30

Join us next Monday, October 30, from 4-6pm for our free networking event with artists and educators, ArtistConnect. You'll enjoy wine and light refreshments as you share ideas in an open and casual setting.

This month's event is inspired by the Halloween season: we will explore the role of impersonation, “dressing up,” and the essentials of play in arts and education, including theater games and role-playing. We will also be discussing and participating in tableaus -- a traditional performance art technique that brings imagery to life and works to build and embody empathy. Bring a friend, colleague, or anyone else interested in the field of education who would like to join the discussion and connect with peers. Costumes are encouraged!

An Afternoon of Sound Closes Now Hear This!
An Afternoon of Sound

Celebrate the last day of our summer outdoor sound exhibition, Now Hear This! An Exercise in Listening with a closing reception on Sunday, November 5 at 12:30pm: An Afternoon of Sound.

The afternoon begins at the Lucas Artists Residency Program Commons with wine and light hors d'oeuvres. After a short reception, we will explore the grounds and sound works with exhibition artists Shane A. Myrbeck, Emily Shisko, and Hugh Livingston, along with curator Donna Conwell. Lucas Artists Fellow Magda Mayas will also open her composer's studio and invite visitors to join her as she presents her work.

This event is free. Just RSVP below, and be sure to wear walking shoes when you come. Also, keep in mind that daylight saving time ends the morning of the 5th, so remember to set your clocks back an hour!
