Rolling Counterpoint:
A Community Conversation Project

Taro Hattori in Rolling Counterpoint

Drawing on the tradition of the Japanese teahouse, our Lucas Artists Program's new commission Rolling Counterpoint by artist Taro Hattori consists of two physical structures: one stationary space installed outdoors on our grounds and one mobile teahouse that will travel to a variety of Bay Area locations throughout the year. Both are conceived as spaces that will foster public dialogue about notions of division and belonging in contemporary society.
Rolling Counterpoint was developed collaboratively with 11 partners throughout the Bay Area. The focus of conversations and story gathering at each location will be determined by community participants and will address such wide-ranging issues as immigration, social exclusion, gentrification, homelessness, and income inequality.

South Bay events in the coming month include:

Euphrat Museum of Art, De Anza College
Wednesday, February 15, 5:30-8:30pm

Japanese American Museum of San Jose, Japantown
Thursday, February 16-Saturday February 18, 12-4pm
Sunday, February 19, 12-3pm
San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin, Japantown
Sunday, February 19, 4-8pm
South First Fridays Art Walk, Downtown San Jose
Friday, March 3, 7-11pm

The mobile teahouse will travel to locations in San Francisco later in March and Berkeley in April to create further opportunities for dialogue. For regular updates on the progress of Rolling Counterpoint, like the project on Facebook -- there, you can add yourself to upcoming events and invite friends to join and participate.

Visit the project page at rollingcounterpoint.com and you will be able to stream select conversations as they happen; you can also record a message detailing your own thoughts about belonging by choosing "Our Voices." Messages will be posted on the project site to be shared with the community.

Get Outdoors with #PixInParks Hiking Challenge
Montalvo Hiking Trails

If you're a hiking fanatic with a hankering for adventure, we've got just the thing for you: the Santa Clara County Parks Service kicked off the year by offering up a fun reason to visit parks around the South Bay.

The challenge is easy: simply hike at seven specific locations and take photos at each one! Locations include Lookout Point at the top of our own Montalvo trails; Stevens Creek Park; Sanborn Park; Mount Madonna; Coyote Lake; Calero Park; and Joseph D. Grant Park. Visit and share at each designated spot this year and you can collect a commemorative T-shirt.

When you reach your destination, post a photo on Instagram using #PixInParks as well as the hashtag that corresponds to your location (for example, #Lookout for the Montalvo location). Search those hashtags now and you'll already see some gorgeous views as contest entries come in.

Click the button below to visit the Santa Clara County Parks website for additional information and rules -- as well as downloadable maps for each trail.

Last Chance: Jimmy Webb this Saturday
Jimmy Webb

Don't leave your cake out in the rain: this is your last chance to get tickets to see award-winning singer-songwriter Jimmy Webb, creator of hits like "MacArthur Park," "Up, Up and Away," and “Galveston,” this Saturday, February 4, at 8pm!

The youngest man ever inducted into the National Songwriters’ Hall of Fame, Webb may be best known for the classics he penned for Glen Campbell, Richard Harris, The Fifth Dimension, and others -- but he is also an electrifying singer in his own right. If you're familiar with his songs, you'll be blown away when you see them performed live in our intimate, indoor Carriage House Theatre!

Read an interview with Webb at popcultureclassics.com, then click below to get your tickets now -- or call the Box Office at 408-961-5858, Monday-Friday, 10am-4pm.
