December 1: Jesse Harris with Petra Haden
Montalvo Writers Series

Just announced! Join us for a special discussion and concert with singer-songwriter Jesse Harris on Thursday, December 1, at 7:30pm in our intimate Carriage House Theatre. Together with author and moderator Katherine Maxfield, Harris will discuss the creative process that fuels the songwriter’s craft.

The second act of the evening is an intimate concert with Harris and vocalist Petra Haden, with whom he released the album It Seemed Like a Good Idea – Petra Haden Sings Jesse Harris earlier this year. Click here to see a music video from the album!

Jesse Harris has been recording music for more than 20 years and has been described as a “staple of New York's East Village music scene.” His sound, hailed by critics as “exquisite chamber rock” blending “modern Americana and jazz-informed folk-pop,” has drawn comparisons to Paul Simon, Serge Gainsbourg, and Neil Young. His songs have been recorded by artists including Smokey Robinson, Willie Nelson, Norah Jones, The Black Keys, and many others. Petra Haden has recorded with performers such as Beck, Green Day, Foo Fighters, the Decemberists, and jazz guitarist Bill Frisell.

Saint Michael Trio Shows Already Filling Up!
Saint Michael Trio

Montalvo's resident chamber ensemble, the Saint Michael Trio, returns in 2016-2017 for four outstanding Sunday afternoon performances taking place in the beautiful setting of our historic Villa.

The first show, "Dissecting Beethoven" on November 13, is already SOLD OUT, but there are still three more concerts in the spring that you can attend. Better hurry, though, as these tickets are moving quickly!

The Saint Michael Trio is hailed as an innovative update to the staid world of classical music. Members Daniel Cher, Michel Flexer, and Russell Hancock—all of whom are also successful professionals and entrepreneurs—receive high praise for their unique, accessible recitals. Each performance features witty and informative commentary that helps put the music in context.

Artists Connect Explores Hip Hop in the Classroom
Artists Connect

Join us next Tuesday, October 25, from 4-6pm in the library of the historic Villa for Artists Connect! Wine and light refreshments will be served as you network and share ideas with artists and fellow educators in an open and casual setting.

For this month's topic—"Hip Hop Culture in the Classroom"—educator Anthony Pineda (founder of the Creatrix Institute) will lead a conversation that explores how culturally relevant material—including hip hop and spoken word culture—can inspire diverse groups of students to express themselves creatively while both developing their emotional intelligence and advancing social responsibility.

Bring a friend, colleague, or anyone else interested in the field of education who would like to join the discussion and connect with peers. It's FREE!
