Black Violin performs in the Carriage House Theatre in January

The holidays are approaching, and Montalvo's business offices, Box Office, and Project Space Gallery will be closing for the last two weeks of December. The park itself will be open during normal hours, but closed on December 25 and January 1.

This nice long break is the perfect time for you to get excited about January 2016. The month is packed with a huge variety of events—there's truly something for everybody, and even with the Box Office closed, tickets are available online 24/7.

In our Carriage House Concert Series, check out Peter Rowan's Bluegrass Band, Paula Cole, Black Violin (pictured; limited tickets remaining), Mary Bridget Davies, and Classic Albums Live presenting Elton John's Greatest Hits.

There are just a few tickets left to experience the Saint Michael Trio's "250 Years of Trio Music" on Sunday, January 10.

If you're a fan of performance art or modern dance, you'll definitely want to check out XLIII: A Contemporary Requiem. This powerful new work, co-commissioned by Montalvo and Santa Clara University, features two of our Lucas Artist Fellows and takes place at SCU's Mission Santa Clara de Asís on Friday, January 15.

Our Writers Series brings Ann Packer for a literary lunch on Wednesday, January 27, in conversation with Katherine Maxfield. Packer—author of Songs Without Words and The Dive from Clausen's Pier—will discuss her fascinating life and her new novel, The Children's Crusade.

Finally, if you're a teacher or a homeschool parent, you can still get tickets for the JazzReach show Yes, Indeed! with the Metta Quintet, on Friday, January 22. It's an educational and interactive program exploring American Blues music through live performance.

We hope to see you in the New Year!

President Obama
signs education reform bill into law

President Obama signs the Every Student Succeeds Act

Earlier today, President Obama signed into law the Every Student Succeeds Act, which will transform our education system. Affecting instructional practice in 100,000 American K-12 schools, it will impact 50 million students and 3 million teachers.

The bipartisan law, which moved quickly through both the House and Senate last week, replaces the No Child Left Behind Act. Among other important reforms, it will integrate the arts, design, and the humanities into the nation's STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) programs.

This change holds great promise for restoring arts education to the lives of students, creating more opportunities for innovative and creative thinking in our nation’s future workforce.

Our Executive Director Angela McConnell penned an op-ed which ran last week in the San Jose Mercury News about the importance of arts education in classrooms—the kind Montalvo champions through our Teaching Artist Program, summer camps, and other education outreach.
