Now open in the Project Space Gallery: Montalvo Historical Fabrications & Souvenirs

(A Pop-Up Shop)

Montalvo Historical Fabrications & Souvenirs

Under the moniker The Marianas*, artists Michael Arcega and Stephanie Syjuco have collaborated on a functioning pop-up souvenir shop that responds to Montalvo's Centennial and its place in the history and politics of California. Entitled Montalvo Historical Fabrications & Souvenirs (A Pop-Up Shop), this art exhibition/store will be in the Project Space Gallery through July 20.

By fabricating historical objects and selling them to the public, the shop playfully examines the commodification of historical "artifacts." During gallery hours (Thurs-Sun, 11am-3pm), the artists will be working on-site, creating limited-edition collectables. They will also conduct a series of FREE, informal public workshops and events:

  • Wed, June 6, 7pm: A conversation with the artists in the gallery.
  • Sat, June 9, 1-3pm: Assembly Line: Making Multiples. Be a part of the creation of the historic "mementos" as you work with the artists on their pieces! No specific skills required.
  • Sat, June 23, 1-3pm: Historic Piñata Making. Michael Arcega will give a visual history of the piñata; participants will learn piñata-making techniques and create their own to bring home!
  • Sat, July 7, 1-3pm: Montalvo Memories: Creating Personalized Souvenirs. The artists will lead an expedition across Montalvo's grounds to find personalized mementos. Create a custom pin-set using the objects collected during your visit.
  • Fri, July 20, 7-10pm: Closing Reception & Blowout Sale in conjunction with our Rock the Garden party. The gallery will be open and everything must go!

Workshops are open to all ages (children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult). Sign-ups are strongly encouraged; RSVP by email at dconwell@montalvoarts.org.

Read an article from KQED Arts about Syjuco's work on the International Orange project commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge. Be sure to watch the video, in which she discusses her process of creating "fictional souvenirs."

now on sale!

Twelfth Night

Join us from September 8-16 as we present six performances of Twelfth Night in the beautiful outdoor Lilian Fontaine Garden Theatre staged by one of California's most prestigious Shakespeare companies, Shakespeare Santa Cruz!

One of the Bard's most enchanting of comedies, Twelfth Night is a classic tale of mistaken identity and a hilarious love triangle run amok. Shipwrecked and fearing that her brother has drowned, a young woman named Viola disguises herself as a male page. In short order, she falls in love with the neighboring Duke Orsino...who loves the Lady Olivia...who loves the disguised Viola!

Shakespeare Santa Cruz was formed in 1981 and aims to interpret Shakespearean classics through a modern lens. The nationally-recognized company performs 3-4 different plays each summer at select venues in the Santa Cruz area and in Montalvo's Garden Theatre, a perfect venue for outdoor theatrical performances. Don't miss it!

Click here for performance dates and to purchase tickets online, or call the Box Office at 408-961-5858 10am-4pm Monday-Friday.
