Answer The Long Distance Call on January 27
Christy Chan: The Long Distance Call

We hope you can join us for our first Open Access of 2017 on Friday, January 27, at 7pm! Lucas Artists Program Fellow Christy Chan and actors Gail Jones and Catherine Lerza will present a live performance of Chan’s The Long Distance Call. A conversation with Chan will follow.

Chan is an artist whose multimedia work is influenced by her experience growing up in the South, where she and her family became targets of the Ku Klux Klan.
The Long Distance Call is a re-enactment of phone conversations she had with Miss Anne, a KKK seamstress in Alabama. During these calls, Chan convinced Miss Anne to provide her with an authentic, custom-made Klan robe for her video work Who's Coming to Save You? Their unsettling yet banal phone calls tell the story of an unexpected interaction between two women, from trust gained to the eventual abrupt end of their communication.

In addition to The Long Distance Call, the evening will feature artist Simón Adinia Hanukai, who will discuss his new work informed by questions and concerns about data mining, as well as LAP Visual Arts Fellow Kim Beck presenting past work and projects she intends to explore while in residence.

Tickets to Open Access are just $10 (free for Montalvo members: contact Chris Wilcox to RSVP). Click below to get yours now, or call the Box Office at 408-961-5858 10am-4pm Monday-Friday.

Wheel Form Ceramics Classes Return in 2017
Wheel Form Ceramics

We are excited to bring back two sessions of Wheel Form Ceramics class in our lovely Creekside Studio space this year! The first class starts soon, so sign up today: sessions are Monday evenings from February 6-27. A spring class (May 1-22) will also be offered.

In these weekly workshops, you'll learn a variety of building, trimming, glazing, and surface design techniques. Your enrollment fee ($200) includes not only materials and the four Monday evenings of guided instruction -- but also three additional Wednesday evenings of optional studio time, during which you can continue to explore your developing clay skills.

Paola Pafumi studied ceramics in the ASUC studio at UC Berkeley. Her speciality is maiolica (tin-glazed, painted Italian pottery), which she learned under masters of the art form in Faenza and Florence, Italy. She will be present both at Monday classes and at Wednesday studio sessions in order to answer questions and provide feedback on your progress.

Click the button below to register, or call the Box Office at 408-961-5858 Monday-Friday, 10am-4pm. We hope to see you!

ArtVenture to Art Basel this Summer
Art Basel, Switzerland

One of the most exciting benefits of Montalvo membership is invitations to our exclusive ArtVentures -- trips to local, national, and international art destinations that include behind-the-scenes gallery tours, access to private collections, and the opportunity to meet and mingle with influencers in the art world.

Our upcoming international ArtVenture is a nine-day excursion (June 14-22) to Switzerland and Germany to experience multiple global arts events. Beginning in Zurich, ArtVenturers will experience Art Basel -- the world’s premier fair of modern and contemporary art, described by Vogue as “the most beautiful temporary museum in the world.” Next, travel to Frankfurt to see Documenta 14, a 100-day art show with a history of pushing the boundaries of modern art. Finally, guests will attend the opening of Skulptur Projekte Münster, a unique sculpture exhibition put on at ten-year intervals by renowned curator Kaspar König

Other upcoming ArtVentures include private, in-home tours of the David Ireland House and the studio of artist Hung Liu. All of these trips are offered by invitation only, and the highest level donors get the most exclusive opportunities.

Sound intriguing? Give our Development team a call at 408-961-5849 to find out how you can become a member and reserve your spot for these truly memorable experiences!
