Grand Entrance & Garden Terrace Project in the works

Grand Entrance & Garden Terrace
Project begins Nov 2
Grand Entrance & Garden Terrace Rendering

If you visit Montalvo any time between November and next May (and we hope you do!), you'll see signs of a large construction project on the west side of the historic Villa.

The Grand Entrance & Garden Terrace Project will completely transform Parking Lot 2 and the lawn area west of the Villa. It will expand space for events and exhibitions, wedding ceremonies and receptions, garden parties, dining, and—of course—art.

Parking Lot 2 will be remodeled to create a wide circular drive leading cars past the front door of the Villa. This new configuration will improve pedestrian and traffic flow at our large events.

Above Parking Lot 2, a new terraced garden will be installed. With an open, flat layout, this space will be a lovely new setting for weddings and private events. It will also provide us with expanded areas for art installations, and its plantings will be irrigated by a state-of-the-art, drought-compliant watering system. It will be accessible by a new ADA-accessible ramp and a wider staircase to better accommodate crowds.

Huge thanks to the generous donors to this project, which is being funded entirely through private gifts. We've already raised more than 80% of our $1.85 million goal, but select naming opportunities are still available. Contact Meghan Heath, Associate Director of Major Gifts, at for more info.

The project is scheduled to break ground on November 2 and come to completion at the end of May. And don't worry: we'll still be open daily at our normal hours (8am-5pm Monday-Thursday; 9am-5pm Friday-Sunday) throughout the winter; the project is not expected to force any park closures.

We are excited about the new look of the Grand Entrance and Garden Terrace, and we think you will be, too. So, be ready to celebrate its completion with us in the spring of next year!

A capella with

Great news: we've saved you a seat in our wonderful Carriage House Theatre to see Rockapella, one of the all-time great a capella groups, on Thursday, November 12, at 7:30pm!

Over the course of nearly 30 years of performances, Rockapella has modernized the art of a capella—texturing their rich, five-part tunes with elements of rock, jazz, R&B, and doo wop. Their most recent album, Motown & More, showcases the group's versatility by presenting familiar Motown hits in new and unexpected vocal styles.

Rockapella recently stopped by the studio at Mashable to sing their famous song Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? in honor of the character's 30th birthday. Click here to see the video!

Don't miss your chance to see this legendary group. It's sure to be a fun concert, and tickets are moving fast! Buy yours today by clicking the button below or calling the Box Office at 408-961-5858 10am-4pm Monday-Friday.

Day of the Dead
with Hector Mendoza

Day of the Dead

Join us on Friday, November 6, from 6-9pm for a special Open Access event with Lucas Artist Fellow Hector Dionicio Mendoza as we celebrate the Mexican holiday el día de los muertos (the Day of the Dead).

Mendoza will discuss the role this holiday plays in his life, give a guided tour of his latest work currently on view in the Project Space Gallery as part of Botanica Poetica, and
lead an altar-making art activity—a traditional practice relating to the day.

The altars celebrate departed family, friends, and community leaders. Some materials will be supplied, but bring more of your own if you like, as well as a photograph or memento of someone you would like to celebrate. We will keep the altars up on view at Montalvo until November 13.

Lucas Artist Fellows Sandra Milena Gomez and Andres Solis will also discuss their new sound and dance performance, XLIII: A Contemporary Requiem, premiering at Mission Santa Clara de Asis on January 15.

This event is presented in association with the San Jose Multicultural Artists Guild’s 18th Annual Día de los Muertos 2015 celebrations.

Be sure to join & share this fun evening with your friends on Facebook! Tickets are just $10*; click below or call the Box Office at 408-961-5858 10am-4pm Monday-Friday.
