Challenge your perspective:
Rashomon by Chuck Ginnever
installed on new Great Lawn

RashomonCoinciding with the reopening of our beautifully renovated Great Lawn, we are excited to showcase an important work as part of our 2013 Art on the Grounds collection: Rashomon, an installation by sculptor Chuck Ginnever, is now on view to the public.

Hailed by art critic Kenneth Baker as “one of the most significant and little-celebrated innovations in late 20th century art,” Rashomon is organized by the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, in cooperation with Gayle Maxon-Edgerton, Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The installation, which consists of 15 identical geometric steel forms arranged in 15 unique positions, is installed on the lawn in such a way that as you move between them, shifting vantage points cause your understanding of the work to change. Visitors are encouraged to consider how different each form looks, despite the knowledge that they are identical. The title Rashomon is borrowed from Akira Kurosawa’s 1950 film of the same name, in which four eyewitnesses to a crime deliver vastly different testimonies about their perception of the events.

Chuck Ginnever, a prolific artist known for his large-scale abstract sculpture, uses his work to challenge notions of perception and rationality.
Rashomon is free to view and will remain on the Great Lawn through the summer. Be sure to visit and enjoy this exciting and thought-provoking work!
