Learning from failure:
Montalvo artists seek entrepreneurs
for stories of struggle

Paco Inclán

Itziar Castelló

David Barbera

Are you an entrepreneur or business owner? Have you ever tried to start a venture only to have it go nowhere? How did you cope and find your way to success in the end?

Three fellows in Montalvo's Lucas Artists Residency Program are seeking stories from people whose failure during their first venture helped prepare them for future success. It's all part of a series of articles for Revista Bostezo, a Spanish language journal of art and thought, which has an upcoming issue on the subject of failure.

Bostezo's editors
Paco InclánDavid Barbera, and Itziar Castelló hail from Spain and are all currently in residence at Montalvo; Barbera and Castelló are also visiting professors at Stanford University. They will be appearing at a public forum and open mic at Alley Cat Books in San Francisco TONIGHT (July 18) at 6pm, and they will also discuss their work at our free monthly Final Fridays party on August 30 (more details on that event will be available soon).

If you would like to share your story of entreprenurial failure, the team would love to talk to you! Contact Itziar Castelló at for more information about how you can be a part of this fascinating study!

All Things Strings:
San Jose Chamber Orchestra
leads fun summer camp

All Things Strings

Do you have a child who plays a string instrument? Give them practice time this summer with All Things Strings: Prelude, taught by the San Jose Chamber Orchestra's own Barbara Day Turner.

This camp runs from August 12-16 and is for kids ages 7-14 who are looking to develop their string techniques in various playing styles (jazz, baroque, etc). Students will also have a chance to compose their own original piece! The week concludes with a short performance on Friday.

To sign up, an audition MP3 or MP4 file must be submitted to Barbara Day Turner at

Seeing double:
Mary Chapin Carpenter
& Marc Cohn
perform this Sunday!

Tickets still remain for this Sunday's fantastic double bill featuring acclaimed singer-songwriter Mary Chapin Carpenter and longtime Montalvo favorite Marc Cohn in the beautiful outdoor Lilian Fontaine Garden Theatre.

Carpenter's early career successes included the Grammy-winning single "Down at the Twist and Shout" and the platinum-selling album Come On Come On. Since then, she has continued to tour but also struggled with severe depression and other health issues. The experience of overcoming those challenges has resulted in a stunningly beautiful collection of songs on her new album Ashes and Roses, which critics have hailed as her most powerful work to date.

Marc Cohn is a singer-songwriter who combines the precision of a brilliant tunesmith with the passion of a great soul man. Perhaps best known for his song "Walking in Memphis," he has recorded a total of seven albums and won a Grammy Award. He has played to sold-out crowds in Montalvo's 300-seat Carriage House Theatre for the past three years; this is your chance to catch him on the big outdoor stage!

Don't miss this unique combination of talents at one of the South Bay's best venues. Click here to purchase your tickets today - and when you do, don't forget to add Dining on the Terrace! Our elegant pre-concert buffet-style dinner on the veranda of the historic Villa is the best way to kick off your Montalvo concert experience.
