Presidential Service Awards Honor Volunteers
Presidential Volunteer Service Award Recipients 2017

This week, we presented Presidential Volunteer Service Awards to 17 of our volunteers, including 10 members of the Montalvo Service Group.

These awards, which are given to individuals and groups who have logged extensive hours of service, were created to honor those who are making a positive impact as in their communities. To learn more about the Presidential Service Awards, click here. And to see a photo album on Facebook of the event with all of our winners, click here!

We greatly appreciate all of our volunteers and the time they give to keep Montalvo operational day in and day out--from working as ushers and servers at events, to helping maintain our gardens and grounds, to working the front desk and in our gallery.

For information on how you can become a volunteer, click the button below or email our Volunteer Program Coordinator Karen McQuade at

Don't Miss Cassils This Friday
Open Access: Cassils presents "103 Shots"

Join Lucas Artists Program (LAP) Fellow Cassils on Friday, March 31 at 7pm for a special Open Access featuring a screening of their haunting short film 103 Shots.

Made in response to the Orlando shootings at the Pulse Nightclub in September 2016, this examination of human connection consists of a series of couples and friends bursting a balloon between their bodies with the pressure of an embrace. It was filmed in Dolores Park during San Francisco Pride with the help of over 200 volunteers.

The film's director Cassils was listed by the Huffington Post as “one of ten transgender artists who are changing the landscape of contemporary art” and has achieved international recognition for a rigorous engagement with the body as a form of social sculpture.

In addition to the screening, multifaceted hip-hop artist, actor, poet, and educator Dahlak Brathwaite will discuss his latest projects and perform; LAP Fellow Rebecca Chesney will provide a glimpse into a new project she is developing while in residence; and LAP Fellow Jen Shyu will present her most recent work.

Tickets are just $10 (free for Montalvo members!). Get yours today by clicking below, or call the Box Office at 408-961-5858, Monday-Friday, 10am-4pm. You can also click here to join the event on Facebook and share it with your friends.

Help Our Forests: Sudden Oak Death Blitz
Sudden Oak Death Blitz

Join us for a free Sudden Oak Death Blitz workshop on Saturday, April 15 at 10am.

What is Sudden Oak Death?
Sudden Oak Death (SOD), a serious exotic disease, is threatening the survival of tanoak and several oak species in California. With each passing year, the swath of infection continues to become more contiguous. SOD Blitzes get locals involved in detecting the disease and produce detailed local maps of its distribution. Maps can then be used to identify areas where the infestation may be mild enough to justify proactive management.

Why should you attend?
Rain levels over the past season have been the highest we have seen in California for years. This means SOD spread is expected to be on the rise, so we need your help! With so much at stake, researchers are calling for this season's SOD Blitzes to be the most well attended to date.

Watch the video above giving an overview of the SOD Blitz survey project, then click the button below to RSVP today!
