The Lucas Artists Residency Program (LAP) at the Montalvo Arts Center has long fostered a special relationship between artists and food. The LAP was the first artist residency in the US to offer emerging chefs a yearlong culinary fellowship and the chance to live and create alongside writers, composers, sculptors, and other artists. Since the residency re-opened in 2004 it has hosted nine chefs whose ability to generate community through communal dining has become a vital part of the LAP experience. Alongside talented culinary artists, the LAP has also welcomed creators from a variety of disciplines who engage with food to explore a variety of themes.

This exhibition includes existing and new works by present and former culinary fellows, collaborative duos featuring chefs-in-residence and resident artists, and visual artist fellows. Through installation, social sculpture, photography, video, and prints, Mountains in My Spoon celebrates LAP alumni’s exploration of food ─ the experience of eating together, the work of those who nourish us, the role of food in fostering wellbeing, and the complex political relationship we have with what we eat.

Confirmed artists include Andrea Blum, Sita Bhaumik, Susanne Cockrell, Dignicraft, Niki Ford, Jessica Theroux, Margeaux Walter and Grahame Weinbren.

This exhibition is organized in association with Around the Table: food, creativity, community, a South Bay festival of food and the arts extending from July 2013 through April 2014. Featuring a flagship exhibition at the San Jose Museum of Art and accompanying festival of activities presented by thirty partnering organizations, Around the Table celebrates and explores the role that food plays in our lives. Mountains in My Spoon is also presented as part of Flourish: Artists Explore Wellbeing, Montalvo’s latest multiyear programming theme, organized by the Lucas Artists Residency Program.

*Mountains in My Spoon is taken from the title of 2012 culinary fellow Niki Ford’s blog that she kept while in residence at Montalvo
