Under the moniker The Marianas* Bay Area artists Michael Arcega (former Lucas Artists Residency Fellow) and Stephanie Syjuco are collaborating on a functioning souvenir pop-up shop that responds to Montalvo's 100th Anniversary as well as its place in the history and politics of California. By fabricating fictional objects and selling them directly to the public, the work playfully yet critically examines notions of memory and the commodification of historical “artifacts.” During the exhibition the artists will be working on-site in the fabrication and production of their limited-edition collectables, and will be conducting a series of informal public workshops and events on the creative fictions of souvenirs.

Closing Reception & Blowout Sale, Friday, July 20, at 7pm.

FREE Public Workshops:

June 9: 1-3 pm

Join artists Michael Arcega and Stephanie Syjuco as they put you to work on their collection of handmade souvenirs! Be a part of the creation of historic "mementos" and actively engage in a lively discussion with the artists. Part sneak-peek into the creative process and part playful examination of historical souvenirs, this fun workshop will keep your hands busy! No specific skills required.

June 23: 1-3 pm

Learn basic Mexican piñata-making techniques and create your own cardboard and crepe paper version to take home! Kids and parents welcome, but good for all ages. Artist Michael Arcega will begin with a visual history of piñatas and show his own handmade creations which update traditional forms with contemporary concerns.

July 7: 1-3 pm

Join artists Michael Arcega and Stephanie Syjuco on a gathering expedition across Montalvo's grounds to search for personalized mementos. Create a custom pin-set using objects and images that you collect during your visit.
